CensusWhy practice tail docking on dairy cattle?

COMFORT

In order to increase the production of dairy farming, herd management has greatly progressed over time. The farm facilities have undergone many changes to offer the cattle a more comfortable living environment as they are mostly kept inside. The monitoring of temperature, feeding and cleanliness contributes to the animals’ wellness.

HYGIENE

When it comes to hygiene, the dairy cows’ tails must be considered. In stall housing, many farmers hang the tails with tail holders to prevent them from coming into contact with the manure. Other farmers choose to dock the tail, which solves two problems: the milkers environment is both safer and cleaner. In loose housing, as it is impossible to hang the tails, some trim the switches while others proceed with tail docking.

WELLNESS

The practice of docking the tails of cows in the dairy industry is governed by a code in Québec, and everywhere else in the world. The establishment of new regulations forbids the practice. The farmers using this method do it for the wellness of their cattle and their employees.

TAIL DOCKING PROCEDURE

Usually, the tail is docked at the same time as when the young animal is unhorned. The procedure is similar to the one of castration. Using the castration instrument, the calf’s tail is tied with an elastic. This elastic stop the blood from circulating in the tail. Three to four weeks later, the tail should fall off on its own, without causing any pain.

If you are opposed to this practice, please allow us to contact you, by giving us your details, and offer you the possibility of visiting the farm to learn more about the procedure.
