CensusWhy practice tail docking on dairy cattle?
POSITIVE REASONS FOR TAIL DOCKING
Prevents tail injuries.
No maintenance. (Ex: No stress caused from handling the animals; i.e., trimming switches)
The wellness of the workers: reducing the level of stress caused by an aggressive animal behaviour or getting slapped in the face (eyes) by tails.
TAIL DOCKING PROCEDURE
Usually, the tail is docked at the same time as when the young animal is unhorned. The procedure is similar to the one of castration. Using the castration instrument, the calf’s tail is tied with an elastic. This elastic stop the blood from circulating in the tail. Three to four weeks later, the tail should fall off on its own, without causing any pain.
